Damn dude, I'm sorry he charged that much for that Ms paint job. Always look at an artists portfolio before hand and see if they do anything close to what you want
Before hand? Or before thumb?? Hmmmm.
Checking the artist's portfolio before getting inked is a general rule of thumb
I liked this comment better
I read “I like this comment butter”
I read “I like this comment better”
Butter is better… on everything.
Even the thumb?
Even the bum?
This is starting to feel like I'm reading Dr. Seuss
No, just on nubs
I can't believe it's not butter!
I can't believe it's not better. The tattoo that is. Butter's peaked.
Build me up, Butter cup.
Buttery comment mmm
In this case, it's half of a rule of thumb
Hey, well at least he got half off
🙄 Thanks dad.. 😄
Just so we're clear the issue isn't that he was charged a lot, it's that he wasn't charged enough. 80 bucks for a tattoo of any kind is incredibly cheap. A lot of tattoo artists charge minimum 1 hour and charge 150-200 per hour, or more. The fact that his rate was so low should have been a red flag
I know solid artists (im not from US) who could charge 80$ for an hour, the "catch" is they usually work slower.
But yeah, artist with decades under the belt and atleast some higher profile works, and excellent portfolio, costs more.
But imo you shouldnt need that kind of talent to tattoo a nail on a finger, even tho this particular nail is absolutely terrible.
Yeah I'm sure they had the same mentality that "you don't need that much talent to draw a nail on" and look where it got them. While simple it takes some skill to not make it look like Ms paint.
How exactly do you know how terrible it is? I keep seeing people at that. Is there a second picture available that I'm not seeing that is both in focus and not taken on a potato?
Weird ass way to defend your point😂, even if it turned down brightness and blurred it you can see it’s poorly done. If you had this on your body, you might feel differently about attention-to-detail.
Oh you mean if it was on my body and i could clearly see it? The picture isn't in focus and when I see this I see a fingernail. Are you telling me you can clearly see details? Ok then please let me know what you think the issue is with this tattoo, and be precise with your criticism so I can understand what details have been done poorly.
While you're at it please point to the details that show this is an actually real tattoo, like the areas where you can see pigmentation in the deeper layers of the skin like you normal can see, proving this is a tattoo and not paint/makeup/whiteout.
I'm not trying to be a dick about it but people are literally insulting me and downvoting me for literally doing nothing more than pointing out the image is poor quality... which it 100% is.
Like I get your skeptical because people lie about stuff all the time but think about how much energy your putting into a post about a fingernail tattoo. Even if it was a fake post because you said the image quality is too poor to discern the tattoo, what does that matter?
Oh I'm only putting extra energy into because I made a comment on the photo quality being bad and for some reason for flamed for it which is insane so yeah I'm defending that statement.
Ur brain is a potato
Depends where you live. I have a great tattoo artist and his minimum is like $60 or $70.
Often for some things like that some tattoo artist do it for free or almost so.
Yep, my local shops (Southeast USA) charge a $75 minimum.
There are plenty of artists who do great work, that have a shop minimum of $50 for tiny stuff like that.
The real issue here, I believe, is a failure to check out their portfolio before getting tattooed.
Yep, this shouldn't have taken anywhere near an hour, and instead of hourly rate it would've been the shop minimum. I know of several reputable shops that have shop minimums in the $60-100 range, where the hourly rates are in the $200 range.
Uhm where I’m from 100/hr is pretty normal and better artists do like 150/hr and this wouldn’t take anywhere near an hour it would take maybe 30 min tops
That highly depends on where you are located. 200 (I'm assuming you meant $) per hour would be insanity in my area, even for the best artists we have.
not every artist charges by the hour. i know several artists that charged based on work and detail and time and it’s always fair prices for what i get unless it’s a minimum fee tattoo. some starting fees i’ve seen locally are $40-60.
Is it that much now days??? I haven’t gotten a tattoo in 20 years…. Let me carbon date myself for y’all!
Me reading that as 'misses' paint job. Visibly confused.
Eta: I got the joke don't worry lol
Oh for sure. He’s a truck driver now so he’s a little limited to options. He more or less had to take the dude at his word
What? Why does being a truck driver mean you have to take someone at their word? Is the guy doing the tattoo sitting on the side of the highway on a bucket with some ink and a tattoo gun?
Probably because he’s mainly on the road in unfamiliar areas
Okay, but the *intermet* still exist in unfamiliar areas.
You’re forgetting about the latest internet update. In order to unlock information about new local places, you have to complete five local challenges. A trucker doesn’t have time to finish all that!
Why not just get it when you're not working, he didn't fuck his thumb up this week
Old people don’t think like you and me. Not need to get too judgey.
Everyone in my family who’s a generation will only use a mechanic, Dr., computer repair or contractor who was recommended. And they all have horrible stories about their dumbass friends cousins who did their driveway.
I’ve explained how I prefer to check their reviews and go with the best one but they are just not comfortable with that. Has to be the roofer their brother used last fall. Has to be.
You seem to be forgetting the point whet he said he's been wanting to get this done for years and went to multiple different tattoo artists. Hell OP could have even helped him find someone. The more people talk about this and OP replies the more I'm not buying this as real. The details in the picture aren't even good enough to determine if this is in fact an actual tattoo.
He meant, he is that sort of truck driver that pees in bottles and throws them out the window, never having heard of smartphones, internet or giving a thumbs up hehe
That’s not far from the truth lmao
Look for a MEDICAL tattoo artist for him, the kind that do tattoos of realistic 3D nipples for mastectomy patients. Maybe (although unlikely) you could even get insurance to cover it.
That doesn’t make any sense lol it kinda sounds like this was the best outcome the way he went about this. Why would you not wanna see your artist portfolio first? Most places have them even at the shop
Ya, I shopped around before I got my first 2. Everything else looked too animated!
Don’t say it don’t say
My brain just wents "amogus" everytime it sees something that looks like the crewmates lol
The thing you’re looking for is called a Medical Tattoo Artist. Its a subset of the tattoo industry. That’s the search term to look for. Not your average apprentice in a shop. There’s a girl on tik tok who showcases some of her work and it’s amazing
There is an artist in SF that does warrior tattoos for breast cancer patients. Usually free.
Can you link the girl’s tiktok? Im super curious now
As wholesome as this comment is, I don’t think OPs dad was looking for an aesthetically corrective tattoo from the correct field or work. This is more along the lines of your eyebrows burnt off and someone sharpies a mad face on to you
They posted it to r/mildlyinfurating so I'm gonna assume their dad wanted a more realistic thumbnail tattoo
I shit you not sir
It looks like a big toe.
thumbs are basically bigger big toes anyway
Just with more flexibility
That user flair is amazing
He banned me from some sub after 2 comments about him with another guy
I thought that's what it was, to begin with.
Ripped off twice.
I thought it was a real nail tbh lmao
I’m so confused at the hate, i also thought that was his nail
Yh, it looks a bit dodgy but so does the thumb (no offence OP's dad). A really neat manicured looking nail would look weird on a not neat thumb. That being said it's clearly not what the client wanted so it isn't satisfactory. Also I have no concept of what's reasonable for tattoos but 80 seems steep for that
A neat manicured nail would look weird, but this is the exact opposite of that. Who’s finger nails are rectangular.
Me too, I give this tattoo a thumbs up
At least white tattoo ink fades away the fastest
Yeah, his dad doesn't need to worry about this being around for very long. Once it begins to fade, someone could go in and do some single needle line work to make it look more like a thumbnail.
looks like it was done with a paintbrush
The thumb is the imposter
As a rule of thumb you should look at the artist's portfolio beforehand.
It was hard to tell from looking at the thumbnail of this post until I got a closer look
Now it looks like he has a fungal infection
while i love tattoos and the artists behind most, this, is my biggest issue.
why the FUCK was he charged that much for that shit job?
shop more than likely had a minimum fee type thing, and the work, yea well, i wouldnt have paid for that, me and the artist wouldve gone rounds, and i am not a fighting person... that is bad, i am sorry for that.
He should’ve charged only half
Think of all the overhead cost to run a tattoo shop, the high bills, rent, high cost of quality supplies, then the artist only gets a lil more than half for the tattoo. In most cases %60. The rest goes to the shop. The artist also has to pay their bills and eat too. That’s why shop minimums are $80-$100. He didn’t only pay for the tattoo he paid for the disposable set up as well. Tattoos are expensive because they are expensive to make in the long run. The are not necessary, so don’t get them if you don’t agree.
I think it’s more the shitty job than the price that’s more infuriating though. If he’s gonna charge 80 bucks, at least make it look like an actual fingernail and not just a white square
Yeah, for the size of it, the price is probably about average. The quality, though, is awful.
I tattoo. Let me tell you the single ink cup, touch of white ink, one needle + set up cost would be $10 MAXIMUM.
“Set up cost” talk with shit like this is very reminiscent of mechanics who fuck people that don’t know anything about cars.
A lot less people know anything about tattooing. The industry is rife with unfair pricing, and this is the comment you get if you say anything.
There’s also the cost of everything else you aren’t mentioning.. like the high electric bills, Rent, other bills, green soap, paper towels, A&D, madicide, alcohol, detol, gloves and other PPE as well as sanitizing equipment. Not to mention the wear on expensive machinery like autoclave and thermofax. If you tattooed for a living instead of scratching out of your house you would understand. It may be a shitty job but I’m sure he got what he asked for, and explained to that white wouldn’t hold well over time.
i get there's overhead, but ffs, this, this is a rip off, plain and simple
To be honest, I believed it was a real nail.
Charged him an arm and a leg.
Slightly less frustrating is how the thumb is out of focus so we can't see just how dreadful of a job was done.
Well finding a tattoo artist that finally agreed to doing it. Isn’t enough being said? Like I’m sure the artist wasn’t the first you asked. Also you don’t think looking at their work or anything else before hand wouldn’t have helped out in telling you why they were the first to say yes?
Hehehe *before hand*
All tattooists have a minimum rate….
No shit. There are tattoo artists who charges minimum 1 hour and charge 200/hour. They have to charge minimum 1 hour to make it viable because of the supplies, new needles, clean up and sanitization afterwards etc. 80 bucks is actually cheap.
Also I don't see why everyone is pissed at the tattoo when this pic was clearly taken with a potato and you can barely tell what you're looking at.
Right, it's like people don't understand that time is money. There are a whole lot of cheap asses wanting everything cheaper because they can't afford it. That guy has to make a living too. Just think, he could have taken on a bigger job OP.
On a brighter note, it looks like a legit fingernail haha
Thumbs down for this.
1/2 thumbs down
At what point did he realize the tattooist had no idea what he was doing?
Looks like he used some whiteout and a napkin
Your dad might want to seek out a medical tattoo artist. Also called a paramedical tattoo specialist. They are the ones who tattoo nipples on mastectomy patients and cover scars on surgeries and cover burn victim skin. They would handle lookalike nails as well.
A cosmetic tattooist would’ve been a better shot.
well hopefully this guy can help [https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/his-hyper-realistic-fingernail-tattoo-went-viral-now-he-plans-to-help-more-people-29541198](https://www.riverfronttimes.com/news/his-hyper-realistic-fingernail-tattoo-went-viral-now-he-plans-to-help-more-people-29541198)
Did you ask for a refund?
He got half off
Damn. I already gave out my bad pun award. 🥇 Here's second place.
So it was $40? Not $80?
No the joke is that half of his thumb was cut off
If it makes your dad happy then it’s perfect
Oh he’s pissed
Well in that case it does suck.
Someone drives a Super-10
The Super-10 is mildly infuriating to me lol
Most shops have a minimum they can charge for tattoos. You could get a smiley face the size of a penny and it would cost whatever the minimum is set at. No excuse the shit tattoo besides maybe scar tissue
I mean, to be fair, I thought it was a fingernail before I read the title
Putting a tattoo on scar tissue needs a much different set of skills to drawing a dolphin on Karen's shoulder. Any artist I know would be extremely reluctant to do anything like that.
80 was probs the shop minimum white ink is very hard to pack in and heavy scar tissue is especially hard to tattoo an 80 dollar minimum is a completely reasonable charge
1/2 thumbs up!
Where I am you wouldn't get anything for $80. Especially nothing decent.
And on an area as delicate and difficult as a hand finger / thumb* . At least $150.
Also a lot of people don't hold white ink well. A lot of people also don't hold ink well in these* areas either.
Also, it’s on scar tissue. A lot of tattooists won’t even work over scar tissue. It takes a lot more skill to do it right.
I wouldn't pay half a nickel for such an out of focus pic
Bro sharpie wouldve been fine
Your dad is a legend
I’m guessing he didn’t nail it
First impression it looks kinda like a big toe nail thats breaking out with nail fungus.
I wish he could now find an ethical, caring artist to fix this half assed attempt and give it a more realistic appearance. I'm sorry, but this looks so amateurish.
What artist wouldn’t wanna do that? That sounds like a really funny tattoo.
My son is a fabulous artist and owns his own tat shop. He could make that look totally realistic.
Like others said, there’s generally a shop minimum that gets charged even if it takes 5 seconds to tattoo. And I would assume it’s difficult skin to tattoo if it’s largely scar tissue. Fingers are also difficult in themselves
bro just drew on him with a white marker
Was this the best picture you could take?
I'm a automotive painter and won't paint a bumper tow plug for anything less than $100, that's typically a 2x2 square. People don't realize the amount of after-work that goes into doing things that you don't see, and you have to make something for doing it. That tattoo does suck though.
A guy told me one time, "beggars can't be choosy"
Post in r/tattoos and someone may volunteer to fix it.
Most good tattoo artists hate to see people taken advantage of.
That said, it's a hard place to tattoo and the skin is going to be pretty scarred which is also hard. Whoever did this took advantage of your dad.
$80 is less than a lot of shop minimums.
he got that toe thumb ngl
You guys know that there are shop minimums. The supplies are very expensive so even if you only have a 10 minute tattoo they charge their minimum.
I would give that tattoo 1.5 thumbs down.
I’m confused. I’m reading the comments and ppl are like omg what. And I’m like omg that’s awesome. I’m glad he could find something that gives him a bi of peace about his injury. $80 is a small price to pay in sure that gives him a ton more confidence now.
Looks like a toe nail
This needs to be labeled NSFW lol
Tattoos do have a base set up cost. Autoclave, disposable items. Maybe costs went up as some supplies became more expensive? Not saying this was a fair price at all; just sharing from experience with several artists over the years.
Don’t say it don’t say it don’t say it
“Finally got a tattoo artist to agree.” Yeah this story is sus. It’s easy as shit to find a semi-competent tattoo artist to do almost anything. You want Pepe the Frog waving a Confederate flag. You could find a dozen competent artists to do this within 10 miles of anywhere. This isn’t a real post.
im gonna be a monster for saying this but... that thumb be kinda sussy 😳
They have always been Among Us ඞ
He should have paid you to do that lol
Now he can hitch half way there.
Can confirm: does look like a man's fingernail
Lmao what a stupid idea to begin with though
I’m uncomfortable for him.
you know what though, at least he can definitely get that fixed. if nothing else.
Idk what y’all are mad about, that’s hilarious
also u gotta explain the first part -- he cut off his finger?
Honestly need to see it healed hand including fingers whole or halved will heal differently and have a lot of fall out of ink. This may look completely different when healed.
I mean..... it does look like a fingernail lol
I don't see anything?
Why did he cut off half his thumb? Lmao
Damn I thought that was glue before I read the title
I thought that was a nail when I first saw it. Might have been cheaper to get a stick on nail though.
He just needs some Kerasal.
El ohhhh ellll
When my wife got her first tattoo, she said the guy told them there was a $60 fee just to get a tattoo plus extra depending on what you get. She paid $70 for a half moon on her ankle the size of a dime.
It looks like he stuck his thumb in somebody's sour cream and then shortly after that someone squished it with a press.
Maybe ask what the minimum charge for the shop is next time before you go.
I'm sorry but this is hilarious.
Shoulda been $20....
Looks like he likes it, he's giving the camera a thumbs up.
Maybe my papa can get feet tattooed on his thighs where his legs end. ☹️
The tattoo is interesting…sure! But I want to know the story behind cutting his thumb off! I suspect that’s the real treasure.
Tbh dude your fault for bringing him to a shitty artist
Looks like a nail to me
Literally took me three seconds to find this on Google.
Aye you have some fungus on that finger
Well tattoo artists usually have a flat rate no matter how small the tattoo. To cover new supplies opened and used. Should've done your research and you would've found this to be true mostly everywhere.
Only half thumb up for this tattoo job ...
Finally got an tattoo artist to agree? You should have gone to the place(es) that does face, hand, neck, around anus and everywhere years ago.
He gave you *Half-off*
I thought it was a real fingernail at first. The pic sucks but it doesn’t look bad. But to be fair, lots of people pay $80 for a full set manicure 😅
